Publisher’s Note on an update on the Winter Park 20th Anniversary Emerald Edition,
and a note on Veterans Day and the importance of documenting our lives for future generations
110324 CREATE AND KEEP WHAT IS IMPORTANT
When I started the 20th Anniversary Edition of Chart for Winter Park where it started in 2005, I said it would be a KEEPSAKE. I am a word person and I heard that word in my head for a reason.
I was touched this week when a longtime advertiser and friend Laura Eidson Cosgrove texted me a photo of her Charticle featuring her and a charity she supports from 2012, 12 years ago. She noted that it was the only newspaper or magazine clipping in her parents’ house as she and family were going through belongings after her parents passed this year.
Another friend texted me a photo this week of Chiropractor Rex Roffler holding a big lobster in The Keys that was featured on the Chart travel pages many years ago and was still framed and hung in his office.
Ernestine Beattie told me that she has copies for each of her children of the Charticle I did on her 50th Anniversary with Jack years ago.
Chart captures the soul of the community members and it has lasting meaning for us all.
I have many pages of both nostalgia and new memories to share soon for Winter Park!
This 20th Anniversary Special Edition of Chart magazine for Winter Park is packed with charities and arts news! I’m so grateful for all the past advertiser / sponsors who are excited to be back in Chart magazine, and a few new people. I’m occupied with creating all of the content so have not contacted all of the past participants in Chart from the first ten years of publishing in Winter Park. I underestimated the time it would take to contact everyone.
I can include you on online promotions if I missed you for the print opportunity. Give me a few weeks to organize our digital platform.
I am posting a Sneak Peek of content online so follow on @chartmagazine on FB, Insta and Twitter. On the website readers can sign up for the email newsletter. Please note you want to be on the Winter Park list.
Sister publication Chart Palm Beach continues weekly online and in print annually as it has for almost eight years.

2024-11-11 Veterans Day
My dad left his college and his football and basketball scholarship to fight in WWII in 1943 with his best friend. In 1944, his B-17 Flying Fortress “Lucky Lady” got shot down in Bordeaux France, then he survived in the farmlands until he was caught and sent to a NAZI POW camp until liberation in 1945. He survived for a short while in a barn with the help of a young French woman, but that is a story for another day. One of my aunts mailed me a box of letters from my dad from his WWII years. She sent it around the time I had kids and my dad had just passed. He had me later in life. I framed a few of the postcards he wrote about his POW baseball and basketball teams, planting a small garden with seeds from the Red Cross and his wish that he could be home for The Hunting Season. I added a photo; facing the photo, my dad is on the bottom row on the right. Thirty-something years ago, I put the mementoes in my baby son’s room with a note, “Your character not your circumstance matters.” He still hangs it in his current home.
Now I help people write their memoirs and autobiographies as a ghostwriter. I wish I had asked more questions. I wish I had documented more of my own father’s stories for my children and how he viewed manhood and his life. The Greatest Generation did not hesitate to protect what they loved: God, County, Family. I kept a small stack of the letters and postcards and plan to find them and re-read them.
Thank you to The Greatest Generation and all veterans who have helped to protect our American way of life. Your service is very appreciated.
July 4, 2026 is the 250th Anniversary of the United States with Americans creating, celebrating, contributing to, cherishing and protecting The American Dream, American Exceptionalism and American Freedoms and Way of Life for 250 years.
