Penny Mahan and David Odahowski at Philanthropy Day Awards

chART gives THANKS for GIVING, Nov. 20, 2011

Friday at the National Philanthropy Day awards at the Ritz Carlton Grand Lakes, 1000 community  leaders, corporate executives and charity organization managers gathered to give recognition for those who excelled at giving in 2011. Hotelier Harris Rosen took the stage for the Lifetime Achievement Award for UCF College of Hospitality among many other impactful initiatives. Other charitable efforts earned applause but the acceptance speech that got the standing ovation and moved the group to tears was the speech that wasn’t given. Pre-teen Sarah Dewitz got choked up and couldn’t speak as she accepted the David R. Roberts Youth in Philanthropy Award and a $1000 check from David Odahoski of the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation. She asked her 700 classmates to each donate a book to neighboring community Bithlo and a groundswell of support now has the young charitable leader with over 60,000 books donated for international distribution. I talked to her after the meeting and added Secrets of the Southern Shells to her personal collection and pointed out the Small Counts Big chapter. I am grateful for Sarah and other innovators giving me inspiring stories to share in chART magazine.

Speaking of the shell book, today is the last of ten days of Orlando Museum of Art’s Festival of Trees. You can pick up a copy of chART magazine and also buy the shell book there to benefit the Museum Shop. chART is grateful for Maryann, Adriana and all the volunteers at the shop for selling chART’s book!

chART is also thankful this season for the clients of publishing company and ad agency Cutting Edge Communications. Dick Batchelor Management Group ( hired Cutting Edge for a promotional package for Child Advocacy 101. Hugh Darley and Idea, Inc. ( hired Cutting Edge for publicity for their designs of award winning ports and resorts in the Caribbean. Existing clients such as Penny Mahan ( photographed above with David Odahowski, also help Cutting Edge to support chART’s mission to report on our creative and charitable communities. chART and Cutting Edge appreciate all of our advertisers and clients!

Yesterday I started the holiday with the traditional trip to Costco for more food than I can store and impulse items galore. One was a CD of Andrea Bocelli’s Concerto One Night in Central Park. The twenty-something girl who checked me out raved about Bocelli’s music and how when she was stressed or upset she would listen to her CD and it would “soothe her soul.” She said she didn’t know about Bocelli till she heard him on Oprah. Creative expression is important to share. I’m ready for the holidays and prepared to keep sharing creativity. Music is healing. Visual Art is therapeutic. Dance is confidence building. Writing is vital to society. It’s all good! I’m very grateful for the intense inspiration for chART’s upcoming two issues and enhanced online in 2012.

I am also very thankful for you, our readers!

Happy Thanksgiving week.
